Full-Service Mobile Telehandler Repair — Boom, Hydraulics, Drivetrain & Safety Systems

SECTION 01

Hydraulic System Failures

  • Cylinder Seals

The lift, tilt, and stabilization cylinders frequently develop leaks due to dust, debris, and high pressure, causing hydraulic fluid loss or drifting booms.

  • Hydrostatic Transmission Issues

Loss of drive power or sluggish movement is often traced to worn hydraulic pumps, clogged high-pressure filters, or failing charge pumps.

  • Control Valve Malfunctions

Sticking or leaking joysticks and electro-hydraulic proportional valves can lead to erratic boom responses or a complete failure to extend or retract.

SECTION 02

Telescopic Boom & Wear Pad Maintenance

  • Wear Pad Replacement

Nylon or composite wear pads inside the boom sections prevent metal-on-metal friction. They must be regularly shimmed or replaced to stop boom chattering and misalignment.

  • Extension Chain / Cable Adjustment

Many telehandlers use internal chains or cables to extend and retract sections simultaneously. Over time, these stretch and require precise tension adjustments or replacement to avoid catastrophic snapping.

  • Hose Carrier Damage

The internal plastic "cat track" or hose carrier that feeds hydraulics to the boom tip can crack or bind, pinching hoses and cutting off attachment power.

SECTION 03

Steering and Drivetrain Weaknesses

  • Multi-Mode Steering Alignment

Telehandlers use three steering modes (two-wheel, four-wheel, and crab). Control linkages, proximity switches, or electronic sensors frequently misalign, causing the front and rear wheels to track out of sync.

  • Axle and Final Drive Wear

Constant operation in deep mud or rough terrain puts immense stress on planetary final drives and universal joints (U-joints), requiring frequent seals and gear oil changes.

SECTION 04

Electrical & Safety System Troubleshooting

  • Load Stability Indicator (LSI) Calibration

The safety computer prevents the machine from tipping forward by measuring axle load. Faulty load cells or bad calibration can lock out boom functions even when empty.

  • Wiring Harness Chafing

Because the boom constantly extends and retracts, wires running to the boom tip are highly susceptible to fraying, short circuits, and intermittent connection failures.
